FOUNDING HOLOCAUST COMMITTEE (2014-2017)

As a member of the Shimon and Sara Birnbaum Jewish Community Center (“JCC”) board, in 2014 Nancy Gorrell formed a Holocaust subcommittee to develop a plan to further the board’s mission of enhancing and strengthening Jewish identity for the JCC community. Each member of the subcommittee was appointed for specific expertise as well as to represent organizations and stakeholders invested in Holocaust remembrance and education.

This small, working subcommittee met monthly for three years to accomplish the establishment of a Holocaust Memorial and a Virtual Holocaust Education Center and local Survivor Registry for Somerset, Hunterdon and Warren counties. Later, the Registry was expanded to surrounding regions. The Holocaust Center opened on December 10, 2017.
